Narcolepsy
This medicine should only be used under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional.
Take methylphenidate exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Always follow the instructions on your prescription label and do not take a larger or smaller dose, or use it for longer than recommended.
Dosage requirements may differ between brands, strengths and formulations. Use only the specific product and strength prescribed to you.
To help prevent sleep disturbances, methylphenidate is generally taken in the morning. Standard and sustained-release Ritalin tablets may need to be taken 30–45 minutes before a meal, while extended-release Ritalin LA capsules may be taken with or without food. Follow the instructions supplied with your medicine.
Sustained-release tablets should be swallowed whole. Do not crush, chew or break them, as this may release too much medication at once.
Where permitted by the product instructions, a Ritalin LA capsule may be opened and its contents sprinkled onto a spoonful of soft food, such as applesauce or pudding. Swallow immediately without chewing and do not store the mixture for later use.
Methylphenidate may be habit-forming. Never share this medicine with another person, particularly anyone with a history of substance misuse or addiction.
Keep the medication secure and out of the reach of children and other people. Selling or giving away prescription medication may be illegal.
Your doctor may need to monitor your progress during treatment. Inform any healthcare professional treating you that you are taking methylphenidate. Before undergoing surgery, tell your surgeon in advance, as treatment may need to be temporarily interrupted.
Read all patient information leaflets and medication guides supplied with the product. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
Store at room temperature in a dry place, away from excessive heat and moisture.
